On the site of a former thermal power plant on the outskirts of Giurgiu, Super Kraft Paper SRL has built one of Romania’s largest recent industrial investments: a €75 million kraft paper manufacturing facility designed to produce up to 120,000 tonnes of sustainable paper packaging per year. The factory will serve the retail and e-commerce sectors across Romania and wider Europe, helping replace single-use plastics with recyclable paper alternatives and feeding a growing circular economy.

How to protect the building envelope from fire?

In an industrial manufacturing environment, fire safety is paramount. A facility processing raw materials at scale and operating around the clock need an envelope that actively resists the spread of fire, givingtime for response and evacuation.

The project team made this a primary criterion from the outset. The selection process focused specifically on the quality and consistency of the stone wool core: consistent distribution of the wool throughout the full thickness of the panel. This is critical as it enables the core to hold its structure under sustained thermal stress, maintaining both integrity and insulation properties even as
temperatures rise.

The Metigla PFV MW 100 is a visible-joint wall panel with a Spanrock® core and metal faces, 100 mm in thickness. It achieves a reaction to fire classification of A2-s1, d0 under EN 13501-1 and a fire resistance rating of EI 180 for spans up to 4,000 mm, and EI 120 for spans up to 7,500 mm under EN 13501-2. That means the wall system maintains its integrity, insulation, and load-bearing capacity for up to 180 minutes under fire conditions.

When immediate intervention is not always possible due to the size or accessibility of a plant, this level of performance is necessary.

Kraft Paper Plant

Giurgiu | Romania

Stone wool’s melting point above 1,000 °C means it does not deform or collapse in a fire, giving the structure precious time, and the envelope a reliability that synthetic alternatives cannot match.

Meeting the demands of a high-performance industrial envelope

To meet these challenges, Metigla, a Romanian manufacturer of metal-faced sandwich panels, supplied its PFV MW wall panel system – insulated with ROCKWOOL Core Solutions stone wool at the core.

At roughly 22 metres tall and covering more than 15,000 m² of panel surface, the industrial complex demanded a building envelope that could match the ambitions of the project inside. It would need to:

  • Provide a high level of fire protection in an active manufacturing environment
  • Deliver durable, long-term thermal and acoustic insulation
  • Withstand the mechanical and environmental demands of continuous industrial operation
  • Be delivered reliably and on schedule across a large and complex build

Ensuring long-term performance and durability

Fire safety was the headline requirement, but it was far from the only one. A facility of this scale needs its envelope to perform consistently across a range of conditions — thermal, acoustic, and mechanical — over decades of working life.

The stone wool core in the Metigla PFV MW panels offers the 100 mm panel a thermal transmittance of Ud,s = 0.43 W/m²K. In a large, heated industrial space, this limits heat loss through the walls yearround, therefore reducing energy consumption and helping maintain stable internal conditions for both machinery and workers.

Stone wool naturally absorbs sound, helping reduce the transfer of industrial noise within the building and to the surrounding area, with practical benefits for working conditions and regulatory compliance.

The steel facings are minimum S250GD+Z275 grade, with PVDF or polyester coatings on the external face. ROCKWOOL stone wool insulation does not degrade or sag over time; it is unaffected by humidity, temperature cycling, or the sustained mechanical vibration present in manufacturing environments. The result is an envelope that should not require replacement or remediation for at least 65 years

Coordinating delivery and installation

Projects of this size succeed on more than product specification alone. With more than 15,000 m² of façade to install across a multi building industrial complex, including a principal hall approximately 22 metres high and two auxiliary structures — coordination and scheduling were as important as technical performance.

Metigla supported the project by closely monitoring the execution phase, ensuring that production and delivery schedules were maintained consistently. The choice of sandwich panels simplified installation sequencing and reduced on-site waste, helping keep the project on track.

The Metigla PFV MW panel was supplied in RAL 6011 and METIGLA Green, giving the facility a composed, professional exterior appropriate to a modern industrial campus. Complementary special flashings and finishing pieces completed the enclosure system, ensuring continuity and weathertightness at junctions and edges.

This collaboration between ROCKWOOL Core Solutions and Metigla demonstrates that the right core material can elevate an entire building system, making a factory safer, quieter, more energy-efficient, and more durable. The purpose of protecting people and planet runs through every layer of this project, from the inside out.

Stone wool at the heart of sustainable manufacturing

There is something appealing about the circularity of using stone wool — a product born of natural, recyclable stone — to enclose a factory dedicated to sustainable paper production. Super Kraft Paper’s primary raw material is waste paper collected and recycled within Romania, directly supporting the circular economy. The building that houses this operation was, in turn, built with materials chosen for their durability, performance, and long-term reliability — and where sustainability is not an afterthought but the foundation.

Stone wool is endlessly recyclable; when the building eventually reaches the end of its service life, the insulation can be reprocessed and returned to the manufacturing cycle. Steel, too, can be remelted and reused. The envelope is both a functional shell and a durable, responsible investment aligned with the values of the project it protects.
